Green soldiers? by David Flint

The US military is probably the world's largest single user of fossil fuels - using the equivalent of 45 million litres of crude oil per day. But it plans to change that. The Pentagon intends to meet a quarter of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2025 whilst the Navy is aiming to meet half its needs that way by 2020. This, of course, is not altruism but a way of maintaining military capability as oil gets scarce and expensive. With its vast spending power, however, the Pentagon will jump-start many renewable fuel businesses in the US.
