Comment - Social Justice
Greed? by David Flint.
As Greens we are against economic inequality because we know that it is bad for society. We learnt
from The Spirit Level that inequality makes most social problems worse. It is especially damaging for
the poor who feel their poverty and powerlessness most where the rich are richest.
But inequality also has bad effects on the rich. Laboratory research shows that people in more powerful
positions have less understanding of the feelings of others.
Experiments at the University of California have thrown new light on this. The researchers performed
five lab studies and two field studies involving over 1,000 participants (Not all students!)
that 'higher social class predicts increased unethical behavior'.
In two of the laboratory studies they showed that higher status causes unethical behaviour,
probably by encouraging people to believe that greed is good. This, of course, is entirely
consistent with the behaviour of bankers, top business executives and Tory politicians.
