Comment - Streets for Living / Road Safety

Hoppers Road by David Flint.

Last Monday (28th October) Chris Bond, Cabinet Member for the Environment, accepted the recommendations of the Council's Traffic department for Hoppers Road. He agreed to impose a 20 mph limit on Hoppers and College Roads and to install traffic calming measures. This will be followed by a further consultation in the adjacent streets.

This decision follows the consultation on the Council's proposal for a limit covering a wider area which, in turn, was prompted by our petition. Out of 1,500 consultation forms distributed 303 (20%) were returned. And of these 50% supported the changes with only 28% against. The proportions in Hoppers Road itself were 60% and 25%. It's clear from our meetings and doorstep discussions that support would be even greater if the Council had proposed, as we originally asked, a scheme not involving road humps.
